How to get black males engaged in the election process? Meet them where they’re at.
One of those places is barbershops, which some researchers have called the “black man’s country club.”
A project taking that approach has won $250,000 from the Knight News Challenge, the Knight Foundation announced Wednesday. The foundation awarded $3.2 million in grants to 22 election-focused projects around the country. This project, called Sharp Insight, is the only Philly winner.
Duerward Beale, the project lead and executive director of the Youth Outreach Adolescent Community Awareness Program, plans to use iPads to conduct surveys in barbershops, as well as share nonpartisan information about voting. The group will also host discussions about civic engagement.
