How Azavea helped this nonprofit get $1M in grants

A regional nonprofit focused on improving early childhood education knew there was a lack of high quality pre-school programs in the area, but it needed something more concrete in order to push for change.

That’s where Azavea came in.

Through its “Summer of Maps” program, the Callowhill mapping firm offered its services for free to the nonprofit, the Delaware Valley Assocation for the Education of Young Children.

The result? A map that showed that 14 percent of the city’s pre-school programs were high quality. After showing the map to Philadelphia’s City Council and the William Penn Foundation, both organizations awarded the DVAEYC $500,000 each, Education Week reported. Preschool providers are now applying for the money.
