Pratt Institute’s fashion incubator has production capabilities

Everyone seems to be opening up incubators, but the new fashion incubator scheduled to open sometime next year at the Pratt Institute does appear to be different in one important way.

It’s not just a place to design, but it’s also a place to make product. It will be capable of producing up to 50 units of a design, enabling a designer inside to swiftly move past a home sewing machine operation and just shy of the level where they would be ready to contract with established manufacturers, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The executive director of Pratt’s Center for Sustainable Design Strategies is credited with founding the incubator, and says in the piece: “Imagine coming into an environment where you can see every part of the system in action, where you are surrounded by creative people with shared values, working together to innovate a new normal for fashion and design.”

The incubator will be located at 630 Flushing Avenue in Williamsburg. It is not the first incubator that the Center for Sustainable Design Strategies has started. They have another one at the Navy Yard.
