Cofounders Chris Muscarella and Borahm Cho met on one of Cho’s visits to New York City, when he was still living in Berlin, shortly after Cho bought the URL “kitchensurfing.com.” A couple beers later, they had pretty much agreed to start a business together, according to the latest episode of “Small Empires with Alexis Ohanian” on The Verge.
KitchenSurfing is a startup that allows individuals to hire private chefs at reasonable rates as they build up their brand and reputation. It operates out of a Gowanus rowhouse and has a team of twenty people, according to its website, but several folks are working in other cities like Los Angeles — where they just went live — and Boston.
Muscarella also mentions a “small outpost in Poland” in his video.
According to the video, New York City chefs are paid much less than their talent is worth at restaurants, and KitchenSurfing chefs are ready to adapt to any New York City apartment. As Murscarella puts it in the video below: “The chefs are punk rock. You give them a heat source you’re good.”
