Gov. Jack Markell at his January 2014 budget address

Building on the ‘Cyber Aces’ online training program Gov. Jack Markell launched in Delaware last fall, the First State earmarked $3 million toward a new ‘Delaware Cyber’ initiative that will fund collaborations in training a workforce in cybersecurity, according to a release.
“As our world continues to change and more transactions take place online, one of the most promising areas for research is cyber security,” Markell said in the release. “There is a significant need for trained cyber security professionals with hundreds of unfilled jobs existing in Delaware today. With support from the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Delaware Tech and the private sector, we can train Delawareans to fill those jobs, and we can create more.”
The University of Delaware has developed a cybersecurity program since at least September 2012.
That money is in addition to a new $1 million toward workforce development for high school graduates in manufacturing and other high tech fields, as first announced back in January. That new money is part of a less than 0.2 percent increase in the state’s budget, Markell said during a press event earlier this year.
