Last week, emerging energy startup Aquicore cinched a contract with a company that got started in a Georgetown basement.
Aquicore will be gathering real-time data for the sleekly refurbished buildings that make up Under Armour’s Baltimore headquarters.
The energy data tracking company launched in early 2013 with a handful of employees. With both hardware and software, it now manages utilities data for 515 buildings with a staff that has quadrupled in size, said CEO Logan Soya.
Aquicore has grown on the strength of a versatile technology that can be useful to real estate companies, cities seeking transparency cred, or any big organization with a portfolio of buildings to manage.
“We can use that real-time data to optimize building operations, lower utility expenses and streamline things like tenant invoicing,” Soya said.
“This is about the internet of things,” he added. “It’s about to be able to collect real-time information.”
Aquicore has also received a hand from local initiatives designed to promote tech startups.
In October, it was awarded $122,500 by Digital DC, a campaign to promote the local technology industry launched last March under former mayor Vincent Gray.
In 2013, it participated in the private Acceleprise mentorship program, which included a $30,000 cash investment, according to the Washington Post.
As a condition for the Digital DC grant, Aquicore recently moved its headquarters to 7th and New York Avenue, which is along the “Tech Opportunity Corridor” envisioned by Gray.
Since 2014, Aquicore has tracked the energy usage of all buildings operated by the District. The data is publicly available on the Build Smart DC website.
The company is also in the process of finalizing its first international deal with a Mexican industrial site, said Soya.
