News Incubator: What else to know
• VCs are finally tapping into women’s healthcare — and local startup Lotus Fertility Insurance hopes to take advantage of the “gold rush.” [Technical.ly]
• The Richard King Mellon Foundation invested $265,000 into the edtech music platform Conduction. The funds will help expand the platform into more Pennsylvania schools, enabling students to create and produce digital songs that are later brought to life by local musicians. • Governor Josh Shapiro announced a $1 million investment to support the growth of semiconductor solutions supplier Powerex Inc. • University of Pittsburgh’s School of Engineering received $3.3 million from the US Department of Energy to develop new transmission technology, aiming to integrate more renewable energy and cut transmission costs by 35% by 2035. [University of Pittsburgh Newsroom]
• Duolingo increased its daily active users by 3.1 million from the second to the third quarter of 2024. The company also increased its total revenue by 40% from the prior-year quarter. [Duolingo]
• North Shore-based train and equipment manufacturer Webtec Corp. announced a $110 million cash acquisition of two international firms: A Spanish electrical equipment manufacturer and a Slovakian company specializing in carbon and graphite materials. [Webtec Corporation]
• Strip District-based electronics manufacturer Excelitas Technologies Corp. announced plans to sell select aerospace and defense businesses to Teledyne Technologies Inc. for $710 million in cash. [BusinessWire]
• Agility Robotics, which develops human-like robots in Lawrenceville, announced an undisclosed minority investment from Schaeffler Group, a German-based manufacturer. The German company intends to deploy humanoid robots in its global network of 100 plants by 2030. [Agility Robotics]
