I’m Candice Norwood, a reporter for The 19th who covers general assignment news. Since 2016, I’ve covered all things politics and policy for The Atlantic, Bloomberg News, PBS NewsHour and other publications in the Washington, D.C. area. I write about a range of subjects at The 19th, but most of my stories center on courts, incarceration and policing. My journey with this coverage began after 18-year-old Michael Brown was fatally shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9, 2014. I spent the bulk of my childhood in nearby Bel-Nor, and I remember hearing from Black residents in St. Louis who felt the news coverage of Brown’s death was dehumanizing. I wanted to do better. Outside of my work, I’m a member of several biking groups and I love to attend queer community events. Most of my social life involves a lot of food: dinner parties with friends and a cookbook club I organize where we choose recipes from the same book each month and come together for a potluck meal.
