On Mondays it’s science, on Tuesdays it’s tech, on Wednesdays it’s engineering and on Thursdays it’s math. That’s the agenda for the STEM-minded Girls Inc. of Delaware after-school program this fall, which runs 10 weeks starting Sept. 6.
The program takes place at 1501 N. Walnut St. in Wilmington and is completely free. Currently, 25 girls are signed up for the program ranging from 6-18 years old.
The curriculum is set up in a way that girls can just drop in. And if they miss a day, it won’t derail them from continuing the program. This chapter of Girls Inc. has created partnerships with organizations like Lockheed Martin and MathPlus.

Girls Inc. of Delaware Executive Director Holly Maddams says STEM is so critical for young girls to embrace. At a certain age, research shows, girls stop pursuing STEM fields at a much higher rate than their male peers.
“It’s a whole lot of other women that helped me get to where I am today,” said Maddams. “The mentoring component is the secret sauce to the Girls Inc. experience.”
