600 School District complaints filed: use this website to submit yours

Students and families submitted 600 complaints to the state about Philadelphia’s underfunded district schools last week, said Helen Gym of advocacy group Parents United for Public Education.

Along with the Media Mobilizing Project and other organizations, Parents United also launched a new site, MyPhillySchools, to make it easier for families to file complaints and, advocates say, hold the state accountable for the conditions in district schools.

The complaints range from “overcrowded classrooms, closed libraries, limited access to nurses [to a] lack of counselors,” according to a Daily News report. The City Paper also reported the tragic story of a Bryant Elementary School sixth grader who died late last month. The student’s father believes that, had a school nurse been on staff that day, his daughter would still be alive.

The state is obligated by law to investigate every complaint it receives and fix any problems it finds.
