Fifteen years ago, while he was at Penn getting his M.D., Cytovas CEO Todd Johnson said Penn academics didn't think highly of academics turned entrepreneurs. Business and commercialization was seen as "dirty" or "evil," Johnson said on a tech transfer panel last Friday. Even now, when he returns to Penn, he said academics joke that he's joined the dark side.

The clinic helps small businesses with every aspect of running a business that does not involve litigation. By offering their services pro bono and taking on clients who are positioned to make an impact in their Philadelphia community, Kosuri believes he and his students are helping revitalize the city.

It's the first cohort of the city's "Innovation Academy," a partnership with Philadelphia University. The seven-week course aims to teach staffers the principles of innovation, like design thinking and problem-solving with analytics.

The website is designed to facilitate the exchange of informations: anyone on the website can access and share anonymous patient cases. This allows more students to learn from a specific patient case than would be possible in a traditional clinic setting.

It builds off the work of Penn's four-year-old UPstart program, which helps faculty and students create businesses, and gives those businesses a physical place to call home. At least one UPstart business is located in the Pennovation Center already: Novapeutics, a diabetes treatment company.
