Facial recognition medical advertiser raises $285K [Startup Roundup]

News from Hoolux Medical, VHX, Flocabulary, Placemeter and others.

Who’s getting money?

Williamsburg’s Hoolux Medical, a company that serves up tailored ads in hospital waiting rooms using facial recognition software, raised $285,000 in an equity round, according to the SEC.

Who’s making moves?

Educational hip hop program Flocabulary has officially relocated back to Dumbo, according to Alex Rappaport, the company’s CEO, who we ran into on the Pearl Street Triangle yesterday. We covered their free trial period for schools earlier this year.

Rap Genius cofounder Mahbod Moghadam has stepped down from all of his responsibilities at the company, following a series of annotations he made on the manifesto by Elliot Rodgers, the alleged Santa Barbara shooter. The story has been covered widely, but here’s one extensive story from Valleywag. We recently wrote about a curious video that Moghadam appears in (it’s also below). The VHX team had a nice day in Gowanus, planning and playing.

SITU Studio wrote about wrapping up its build of the final of five spaces it has recently constructed inside the NY Hall of Science. The ‘treehouse’ is only partially done but looks pretty amazing already.

Who’s getting buzz?

Forward Comix won a Glyph Award for “Best Male Character,” for Jack Maguire of the Nowhere Man series of graphic novels. Forward Comix is a local comic book company that has been publishing its comics in every possible format as digital evolves the medium. The company is currently pursuing crowdfunding for its fourth Nowhere Man trade paperback. The Glyph Awards are awarded each year in Philadelphia, and the program has been recognizing distinguished contributions from African American comic creators and black characters in comics for the last fourteen years.

Placemeter appeared in a CNN story. We covered them in February.
