Biotech continues to attract a lot of money to Baltimore. Over the last week, a pair of local companies got sizable grants to boost their Baltimore operations.
Emergent Biosolutions received a $2 million grant from the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund to expand its Lombard Street manufacturing facility. Emergent was recently tapped by the federal government to investigat the experimental Ebola treatment ZMapp and previously made the Anthrax vaccine, BioThrax. The company will use the grant money to fund an expansion that will result in an estimated 133 new jobs.
AgeneBio received a $900,000 grant from the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation. The company, which grew out of research at Johns Hopkins University, is developing a drug to treat patients in the pre-dementia stage of Alzheimer’s disease.
