SEPTA and SourceOne, an energy services consultancy and subsidiary of Veolia Energy North America, announced a new three-year partnership on Monday to improve the transit system’s energy management with the goal of reducing costs and lowering its carbon footprint.

SourceOne was selected after SEPTA put out a public request for proposal seeking consultation on its energy management practices, according to the press release.

SourceOne operates nationally, but recently opened offices at 26th and Christian, a representative told Technically Philly. The company’s primary experience with the city’s infrastructural needs come through Veolia Energy’s presence in Philadelphia. The parent company operates three steam production facilities and one chilled water facility as well as a 26 mile distribution network that contributes to the city’s heating and cooling infrastructure.

Here is what’s SourceOne’s responsibilties to SEPTA will entail, according to the release:

“As part of the agreement, SourceOne will provide recommendations on the best practices for energy management to one of the country’s oldest transportation systems, dating back to the deployment of electric trolleys in 1892.  SourceOne will work with SEPTA to assist and advise staff on strategies for the purchase and management of all SEPTA utilities, including natural gas, water and sewer (including all storm water issues), electricity, heating oil, and propane.  Additionally, SourceOne will evaluate renewable energy credit markets to be used to determine the viability of pursuing different alternative energy projects as required.”
