In case you missed it, we wrote a recap of the Fall 2011 DreamIt Ventures Demo Day that took place at World Cafe Live last Wednesday. Business Insider has a Q and A with Amy Banse the head of Comcast Ventures. The former head of Comcast Interactive Media here in Philly made the move to the West Coast last year as part of the new gig. The issue of women in startups has received lots of attention lately. On Technically Philly we covered the rise and uniqueness of the local community yesterday. On Sunday, blogger Penolope Trunk caused a stir on TechCrunch with her guest column suggesting that most women purposely choose to not found a startup.
In an email to Technically Philly, AboutOne revealed that it has received an additional undisclosed investment from Mid-Atlantic Angel Group. The company raised $1.6 million from Golden Seeds last week.
Not taking a break after Demo Day, DreamIt Ventures managing partner Kerry Rupp traveled down 95 to participate in a job growth panel with Governor Jack Markell.
GIVE A GLANCE
Two marquee First Round Capital companies announced new founding rounds this week. Uber, the on-demand cab and limo company, announced at Le Web it has raised $32 million. The company also said it is expanding its service to Paris. First Round Capital is an investor in the company in its angel and Series A rounds though is not listed as an investor in this latest round, according to TechCrunch. However, First Round did follow on its initial investment in Fab.com this week, according to a press release. Fab.com announced a $40 million round led by Andreessen Horowitz with First Round and others also participating.
According to a press release, Cross Atlantic Capital Partners announced yesterday that it led the Series A financing round for Sagence Group, a management consulting firm. Don Caldwell, founder and CEO of Cross Atlantic will join Sagence Group’s board of directors. We interviewed Caldwell this summer about the firm.
Comcast Ventures was listed as one of the investors in the Plum District’s $20 million Series C round. The San Francisco-based company is a deals site targeted to mothers.
Wanye-based clinical trial company IndiPharm has raised $200,000 according to SEC filings.
