Picture 1Quonix Networks, a colocation data center located at 24th and Locust, will be expanding to a second location in Wilmington, Delaware.
The company currently services over 120 mostly local companies from its current location, but is looking to entice larger Fortune 100 companies by taking the trip down I-95.
“We want to compete with some of the larger data centers out there,” says founder John Von Essen, adding that the company needed a second facility to increase redundancy in case of disaster. Von Essen says the new digs will have room for 60 server racks cabinets costing Quonix between $175,000 and $200,000, which is a long way from the company’s humble beginnings in 2003.

Phillys got data: According to Von Essen Philly only has three “carrier” buildings, suitable to host data centers:

  • 401 N. Broad
  • 2401 Locust
  • 1309 Noble St.

Quonix was bootstrapped by founder John Von Essen after he saw his then-employer, telecom company APX, treat its data center services as an afterthought.
“They could care less if they lost the entire colocation business because it was a small percentage of their revenue,” says Von Essen.
He started Quonix by renting out 60 square feet from another data center. For next three years Von Essen slowly added customers while investing profits back into the business until in 2006, when the company expanded to its current location.
Now, Quonix employs five engineers and offers 24/7 access to its customers. In its seven years of existence it has only lost two customers: one went out of business and the other no longer required collocation services.
“We like to say that when you’re with Quonix your with us for life,” he says.
