This is Technically Baltimore’s weekly One Big Idea. We’d like to use this space to allow technologists, community organizers, activists and other thought leaders in Baltimore city propose one idea for making this city a better place to live and work.

This week’s One Big Idea comes from Matt Van Itallie, managing partner at Canterbury Road Partners. In the video below, recorded at Ignite Baltimore 11, Van Itallie talks about Canterbury’s proposal to launch 100 technology startups in the Baltimore region next year, while introducing 200 undergraduate and graduate students to entrepreneurship, as a way to accelerate regional economic development.

In his Ignite talk, Van Itallie:

  • Sings the praises of technology transfer, the movement of ideas (“from Google to Gatorade,” he says) generated in universities and federal labs to the market place, and the assets available for university-led technology startups.
  • Provides an overview of quantitative analytics of patents, also known as the “Moneyball” approach.
  • Shares two unusual case studies of technological innovation: hot pepper squirrels and laser starfish.
