Founded in 1960, Baltimore Heritage, a nonprofit organization that works to preserve the city’s historic and architectural landmarks, released the Explore Baltimore Heritage app in early May, but officially began promoting it this week. The app, developed by DXY Solutions in Cleveland, Ohio, catalogs 164 different designated city landmarks, which, according to the Baltimore Business Journal, is an updated list.

The city’s Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP) released an updated list of 164 designated city landmarks on July 10. Unlike the previous list, which had not been updated since 2003, the new collection of historic buildings is available online and includes 43 more landmarks than the earlier version — complete with pictures of each and maps showing their locations. The app features a Google map dotted with city landmarks. Upon choosing any particular landmark, like the H.L. Mencken House, for instance, users are brought to a separate screen that features a short description, photos, oral histories and film footage (if available), and a panel to get directions and share the landmark’s location over social media.
Interested in taking the app for a test run? Try it out this weekend at Artscape, where Baltimore Heritage will be offering walking tours of the Station North neighborhood.
