Happy Ada Lovelace Day!

In 1843, mathematician Ada Lovelace published a translation of an article on the first known computer, Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, along with her own extensive annotations. In one of those notes, she described how the machine could compute numbers via what we’d now call an algorithm: a sequence of steps for the machine to follow.

Though the Analytical Engine was never built and she never saw her code run, her logic embodies the core idea of algorithmic thinking. Lovelace even imagined the machine handling symbols such as music or text, in addition to raw numbers. Because of this, many historians regard Ada’s note as the first published computer program.

Every second Tuesday of October, Ada Lovelace Day celebrates women and nonbinary innovators, and how imagination and representation power progress, so teams that prioritize inclusion, mentorship, and equitable hiring can build better technology.
