Smash fascists with your handbag in this new Brooklyn-made video game

Much has been written about the ethics of punching fascists, but not so much on the ethics of whacking them with your purse in a video game, and that is what the new indie game Handväska! is all about.

The game is pretty simple. Players see from the perspective of a person with a purse. They use the keyboard to move around and have 15 seconds to whack as many lego-looking fascists with your purse as possible.

As the game’s description says, “Line up your swings, knock baddies into each other like bowling pins, and thwack your way to a 100% victory.”

The game is the work of Brooklynites Ramsey Nasser and Jane Friedhoff, and was developed over 48 hours at last month’s Global Game Jam at the NYU Game Center.

The game is available for download here, with a suggested donation of $3. The first $500 went to the Southern Poverty Law Center, according to Friedhoff. The remaining donations will go to CUNY CLEAR.

Correction: Donations from the game were given to the Southern Poverty Law Center, not the ACLU, as was reported in an earlier version of this post. (2/16/17, 4:06 p.m.)
