In an effort to add value to the travel experience, Williamsburg’s Vice is partnering with Airbnb to curate interesting locations and experiences around the world.
The Wall St. Journal reports that the company, which creates controversial editorial content about extreme, unusual and cool things around the world, will launch a pilot program of curated trips to Cape Town, Paris, New York and Tokyo.
“The pilot offerings include a look at the electronic music scene in Cape Town led by DJs Spoek Mathambo and Yolanda Fyrus, a tour of Tokyo’s LGBTQ nightlife culture and an inside look at the Voguing dance world in Harlem,” Lukas Alpert writes. “In Paris, the tour will focus on cabaret and burlesque events.”
Airbnb will make money off the bookings for the trips, and to pay Vice, will take out advertisements with the company to promote the trips.
Vice has long been known as an edgy and interesting publication, and this move could represent a new way for publications to generate revenue off their reputations and audiences besides just advertisements. Vice will join fellow Brooklyn publication Atlas Obscura in this. That company, which focused on weird places around the world, has also begun creating travel experiences to interesting locales as a way of supplementing their editorial revenue.
