Brooklyn’s homegrown music discovery site Hype Machine published its top artists of 2016 on Wednesday, with a 50-track playlist of up-and-coming artists equally chill and groovy.
The Greenpoint-based company, which has been around since 2005, compiles the most talked about songs from indie music blogs all over the web, creating a kind of Billboard Hot 100 for internet buzz.
“A lot of the media and digital music environment has changed [since 2005],” Hype Machine founder Anthony Volodkin said via Twitter direct message. “People still want to know what to listen to, that problem hasn’t really gone away, and of course, lots of trendy solutions to that problem appear all the time but I think that’s partially because most of the music platforms haven’t really figured out what to do with individual curators – if you look around, none of them really do it well.”

Curating music is a labor-intensive task, he added. It’s way easier to write an algorithm to suggest tracks based on preferences, but there remains something that humans have that robots haven’t mastered yet when it comes to matters of taste.
