This weekend: Go to a tech potluck in McCarren Park and play some pétanque

We’re supposed to get a break in the rain on Saturday, so why not go on a picnic? Luckily, lest you do anything not tech-related, there is a tech picnic going on in McCarren Park from 12-3 p.m.
“We will meet at the Bocce courts, which we will use for the game of Pétanque,” according to organizer Damien Duchamp, a Meetup organizer and adjunct professor at St. John’s College. “I’ll also bring some ultimate discs.”
The picnic is a potluck, so everyone is encouraged to bring something to share. That’s a concept we’re familiar enough with. We had to ask the resident Frenchman at our coworking space what pétanque is, however. Draped in a scarf, he answered in the most beautifully French way I could’ve expected.
“Pétanque? You want to know that, you want to know what that means,” he said. “It’s the French equivalent of the bocce Italian game. You play with friends, sun, a glass of rosé, it’s not too hard.”
He added that there is a pétanque tournament each year at Bar Tabac on Smith Street on Bastille Day (July 14), should the picnic this weekend pique your interest.
