Kickstarter of the Week is a new regular series highlighting the technology, creative and innovation Kickstarter campaigns in Baltimore that might be worth your support. See others here.
The Baltimore region does more than crabs and football. (And, by football, we mean losing two straight overtime games in a row.)
A vibrant video game development industry exists in both the city and the surrounding counties. There’s Gamescape, now an annual showcase for independent game developers to show off their games during each summer’s Artscape festival. While Big Huge Games went belly-up earlier this year, the void has been filled by Impossible Studios. Mindgrub Technologies is pioneering innovation in mobile gaming. The region even has a site dedicated to video game coverage in BaltimoreGamer.com.
What Baltimore lacks is a gaming convention, according to Will Windley. He’s now raising $6,000 on Kickstarter to bring SoMariCon: Baltimore Gaming Convention to the city in 2013.

The convention itself appears to be an offshoot of the SoMari Comics & Gaming store opening up in the city in April 2013. According to Windley’s Kickstarter campaign, the goal is to invite the best gamers from around the country to compete at the Holiday Inn in downtown Baltimore, duking it out in “Mortal Kombat 9,” “Super Street Fighter IV” and “Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3”.
