Sickweather, the Cockleysville-based illness-mapping startup that culls information from social media data to plot and predict the spread of infections and sickness, has released a pilot episode of a “Sickweather U.S. Forecast.”
The three-minute-long video draws on the talents of meteorologist Justin Berk, who explains where in the country people should be prepared to fight off the flu, allergies the common cold and several other illnesses.
Also in the video is epidemiologist Jennifer Schroeder, who contributes her expertise in explaining crud, an enigma of a respiratory infection that can lead to sinus infections and, in some cases, pneumonia.
The effort could be the start of an interesting intersection between content and marketing for Sickweather. Posted to Youtube, the weather report calls to be shared across social media because it’s a smart health alert done in an interesting twist to the familiar weather report format. Its success may be determined by how well and for how long it can retain that shareable quality, which could spread the Sickweather brand as a sharp way of marketing their web service.
