Montaj: video montage editing iOS app to launch free Android version

Montaj is something like a Vine-Instagram mashup, allowing users to take a series of five second video clips to then put them in a movie-style montage sequence with filters.

An Android version of Montaj, the free, short-form video editing mobile app, is coming, said cofounder Demir Gjokaj, but developing for the Google Play Store is a headache.

“We would love, love, love to be in Android,” he said at the April Brooklyn Tech Meetup. “You know you have to do it. You’re obligated to do it, [but] you know it’s going to be a disaster.”

Montaj is something like a Vine video mashup tool, allowing users to take a series of five second video clips to then put them in a movie-style montage sequence with filters. Features include:

  • Simple soundtrack. Once you’ve picked your shots, shake the device and Montaj automatically applies a filter and background music. Shake it again, and it tries over.
  • Users can choose to specify music and filters.
  • There is also a voice over option for the montage, and users can vary the clip, music and voice over volumes to their liking

Gjokaj said that the company, which works out of downtown bank-turned-coworking space Metropolitan Exchange, is working on “a branded aspect that they can’t really talk about now.” That said, in the Q&A he assures the audience that Montaj will always be free. Montaj is not alone in the clever video app space. [TechHive]

Gjokaj founded Montaj with Dan Long, they’re both 33, and they launched the effort out of Long’s Fort Greene brownstone.
