Mighty Writers is going digital.
The youth literacy nonprofit founded in 2009 is rolling out several tech initiatives, including an online magazine created for and by high schoolers called The Mighty Post.
Launched last week, The Mighty Post aims to teach students new media skills while giving them a space to express themselves.
The Mighty Post is a digital publication for a few reasons, says program manager David Williams. Students want to share their writing with their peers, and an online publication has greater reach, Williams says. It’s also important to teach students about new media, he says.
Williams is still looking for high schoolers to be deputy editor interns. Check out the requirements here.
Mighty Writers is also planning tech-based workshops for teens. According to a recent announcement, some ideas include:
- Social Networking for Success: Teens will learn the ins and outs of networks and tools including Twitter, Tumblr and LinkedIn; they’ll become familiar with privacy settings and strategies for maintaining a respectable and employable online presence.
- Fashion Forward: Teens will develop and build an app related to local fashion and thrift stores.
- Mobilize Your Voice: Mobile reporting using smartphones.
- The Saturday Morning Anti-Cartoon Series: A crash-course in blogging, from headline writing to Instagram to five-second videos using smartphones and digital cameras.
If you want to get involved with any of these workshops or have an idea of your own, head over here.
