There’s plenty of hype about how virtual reality will be the new medium for content creation but there still seems to be very little in the way of VR offerings. Maybe that’s because VR is hard to create.
That’s the problem a new Brooklyn startup is trying to solve. The Dumbo-based EEVO raised $1.3 million this summer to try to lower the barriers to entry in creating VR.
“We noticed that even as content creators and developers were obsessed with VR, we couldn’t find accessible tools to create the experiences we knew would be the most compelling, so we decided to build those tools ourselves,” EEVO founder Alejandro Dinsmore explained in an email. “Ever since then, our mission has been to democratize the creation and distribution of immersive experiences.”
Dinsmore and his three cofounders, Casey Hancock, Matthew Griffiths and Harris Gordon, completed Techstars earlier this year. The group, which includes two non-cofounders, all met at Vassar College, in Poughkeepsie, where they were in the class of ’15.
The company plans to use the money from the raise to make hires in sales and marketing in order to grow revenue on the back of a new iteration of the company’s core product, called Composer, which Dinsmore says will be a “self-serve native SDK that will make it a lot easier for companies to create and publish interactive immersive experiences.”
Dinsmore said the company chose to locate in Dumbo because it’s a “natural choice” for startups. “It’s a beautiful neighborhood to work and is quickly becoming one of NYC’s leading startup hubs,” he wrote. “It’s got a great creative vibe with amazing views of the river and the Manhattan skyline. Not to mention it’s conveniently close to downtown Manhattan while the rent is much cheaper than actually working in Manhattan.”
