For five years, close to $102 million has been provided by the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund to 258 different in-state companies working to develop new technologies in the stem cell research and life sciences fields.
On Wednesday, the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund was one of six agencies nationwide recognized for this work when it received the Excellence in Technology-Based Economic Development Award from the State Science and Technology Institute, an Ohio-based, national nonprofit dedicated to improving state economies in science- and technology-related fields.
The fund, which is administered by TEDCO, won the award in the Expanding the Research Capacity category, according to a press release.
Established in 2007, the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund “supports a variety of grant programs for stem cell research in Maryland, with the dual goal of developing new medical strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases and spurring economic development in the state,” and projects the fund supports generated more than 500 jobs in Maryland during the fund’s first two years, according to the release.
