If you grew up bookishly, you probably came across The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and Jules Feiffer.

Originally published in 1961, it has been a little over 50 years since two guys living in Brooklyn put the book out, and a local filmmaker is working to bring a finished documentary about it to the public. Already funded through a successful Kickstarter that reached 195% of its goal in 2011, unexpected costs have led the filmmakers to seek an additional $14,000 in order to complete it for a fall release.

There’s not a lot of detail in the explanation for the need for additional funds, but at the end of the Kickstarter page, the director, Hannah Jayanti writes of unexpected legal and insurance costs, as well as a need for a stronger marketing budget.

Anyone who gives $18 or more will receive a high-res digital download of the film. At higher levels, backers can even get a phone call from the author.

Juster and Feiffer were neighbors inside a brownstone in Brooklyn Heights when they made the book. Juster cooked meals for Feiffer and read him passages from the work-in-progress. Then Feiffer started making sketches of Juster’s characters, and the collaboration began.

The two worked together again on 2010’s The Odious Ogre. At the end of the Kickstarter video below, the two commit to making another book together every 50 years.
