Hankering for some virtual reality?
Then you’ll want to check out IFP’s Film Week, from Sept. 17 to Sept. 22, which is jam-packed with events like a “VR Garden” showcasing the latest technology, an augmented-reality installation that examines murals in Brooklyn that memorialize young men and a panel about storytelling with virtual reality.
The six-day event, now hosted in Dumbo after a long run in Manhattan, covers all aspects of filmmaking, from production to distribution, and features a handful of Brooklyn tech folks like the team behind Bushwick documentary studio Scatter and Jamie Wilkinson, CEO of Dumbo’s VHX, which recently was acquired by Vimeo. Plus Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras and director Ezra Edelman, whose ESPN documentary OJ: Made in America made a splash earlier this summer.
The events will take place at the Made in NY Media Center and the Gelsey Kirkland Arts Center, both in Dumbo. (IFP moved to Brooklyn in 2009 and helped launch the Made in NY Media Center in 2013.)
An all-access pass for the week costs $350. Daily passes are also available for $100. IFP is currently running a 20 percent off discount with the code “LABORDAY” that’s good till Tuesday.
We’re giving away five pairs of week passes (ten total). For a chance to win, sign up for our newsletter, which sends you a roundup of Technical.ly Brooklyn’s news every day. When you sign up, use the code “IFP.” If you’re already getting our Technical.ly Brooklyn newsletter, sign up for our national newsletter for headlines from all across our Northeast markets, using the same code. A few exhibitions and screenings will be open to the public for free. Here’s the list:

  • The VR Garden, featuring virtual-reality technology from U.S. and Canada, sponsored by Montreal-based arts center Phi Centre
  • The Art of Dying Young, an augmented-reality installation from filmmaker Shawn Peters and producer Barry Cole that examines murals in Brooklyn that memorialize young men
  • A viewing of the latest VR work from Gabo Arora, the founder of the United Nations’ UNVR Lab
  • Tactile and interactive exhibits from creative studio BRDG
  • Digital projections on the façade of the Manhattan Bridge, courtesy of 3_Search, the collective that organizes the “Light Year” show

With the exception of the Arora event, which is taking place on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the exhibitions can be seen throughout the week.
These tech-relevant events caught our eye:

Arora and the makers of The Art of Dying Young will also be giving separate talks on their work during the week.
