Single-word Brooklyn startups raise real money: $3.5M for Feather, $3.6M for Honcker

There's moolah in the coolah for these two startups that help you not own stuff.

Feather wants to help you pretty-up your place.

Two Brooklyn-based startups raised more than $7 million combined this week, both of which have the goal of allowing the user to buy less stuff.

Let’s start with Feather. The Dumbo-based startup is a sort of Rent-a-Center for the millennial market.

With Feather, users can search and rent home furniture and have it delivered.

The idea for the company came after founder Joe Reno and his fiancee moved to New York and spent a day schlepping furniture and buying a couch on Craigslist only to find out it wouldn’t fit through their small, New York stairwell.

Feather raised $3.5 million in a round led by Kleiner Perkins with help from Bain Capital and others.

The other startup is Honcker, which is a bit like StreetEasy for cars.

With the company’s app, users can search through car listings from more than 200 dealerships in the New York area and allows you to lease with the tap of a finger. The contract is signed on the user’s phone and the car is delivered to the user’s apartment.

The startup raised $3.6 million in a round led by Evolution Capital Partners.


The raises are both pretty big by Brooklyn standards, which had a median raise of about $1.8 million last quarter.
