Epic Games, Inc., the North Carolina-based game developers responsible for Gears of War 3, has opened Impossible Studios in Hunt Valley, Baltimore County, to bring “world-class game development expertise and creativity to Epic’s growing team,” according to an Epic Games press release.
Impossible Studios employs 36 people and is headed by Sean Dunn, formerly of Big Huge Games, the Timonium-based game development company purchased by 38 Studios in May 2009, which folded this last May. As early as June there was word that former staffers of Big Huge Games had contacted Epic Games about starting up a new video game development studio in or around Baltimore in an effort to keep together some of the Big Huge Games team. (Impossible Studios was actually founded in June under the moniker Epic Baltimore.)

According to the Epic Games press release, Impossible Studios’ first project is an iOS game:

Led by studio director Sean Dunn, Impossible’s first project is the touch-based action role-playing game Infinity Blade: Dungeons for iOS. Infinity Blade: Dungeons, which was conceived at Epic’s Cary studio, is being developed in collaboration with Epic and ChAIR under Impossible’s roof in Maryland. [more]

“Epic Games has truly embraced this stellar collection of developers who were displaced by the closing of Big Huge Games,” said Dunn.
Impossible Studios joins an Epic Games network that has subsidiary developers in Utah, South Korea, Japan and Poland, and will bolster the well developed video game scene in the Baltimore area.
