Common is coming to Williamsburg with a huge new coliving space

Coliving company Common announced Wednesday that it is bringing a big new shared-living space to Williamsburg.
“With the successes and learnings of our first two homes, we’re doubling down on our vision of building a newer, friendlier way of living,” the company said in an announcement this morning.
Common’s Havemeyer House will have 51 bedrooms and 12 suites. Rooms will start at $1,800 per month. This time there are no renovations, the building will be built from the ground up.
Common’s two existing buildings, both in Crown Heights, are much smaller, one with 19 rooms and the other with 10. With 73 total bedrooms, the Williamsburg space will be more like an apartment building than a walkup. The two houses have done extremely well. In its first week of applications, over the summer, Common received 150.
Speaking with Common founder Brad Hargreaves recently at Technical.ly Brooklyn’s Innovation Awards, he said he expected more big news to continue coming in 2016.
Common has made some changes, though. In a blog post last week, the company explained that it would now be offering lower rates for people willing to sign for 12 months or 6 months, though the month-to-month option remains.
With space at such a high premium in Brooklyn and prices rising with no obvious reason to stop, maybe the question is not whether coliving can work, but whether in the future having your own kitchen and living room will be a must.
