Cam girls are the women who do sex work online, performing for clients over private or semi-private online video for pay. Now, a Brooklyn filmmaker wants to give them a chance to explain why they do what they do, what they get out of it and what it means for them, in a documentary called Cam Girlz.
You can support the effort now on Kickstarter. $10 gets you access to a private Tumblr built by the filmmakers and the women profiled in the film. $20 gets you a digital download of the final film.
In the Kickstarter video (below) you hear a number of different voices, presumably women in the film. Some of them say they find the work thrilling and others say that the genuinely care about their clients.
Like previous projects, the director Sean Dunne appears to be interested in humanizing and adding multiple dimensions to people who have previously been painted by society and the media one-dimensionally. In previous films, he has explored subcultures such as Juggaloes or oxycontin abusers in West Virginia.
Are cam girls just improvised web porn on demand? Is this work porn as documentary? Or is there more to the vocation and the movie than that? Find out by supporting the film and seeing it when it comes out.
