Baltimore City School Board considering placing cell phone towers on rooftops of 3 schools

At its meeting last week, the Baltimore City School Board was considering lease agreements to put cell phone towers on three city public schools, reports the Baltimore Brew.
According to the Brew, the board members “tabled” the discussion until the next City School Board meeting on August 14.

The agreements are between city schools and Cricket Communications, Inc. to put “wireless communication equipment” at Cherry Hill Elementary School and two schools in the Walbrook neighborhood, Baltimore Civitas and Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy West. [more]

Apparently, Baltimore City had already been leasing schools’ rooftop space. Upon asking city spokeswoman Edie House-Foster, the Brew was told “there are currently 21 lease agreements for wireless equipment to be placed at 14 city school locations.” [Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy West is where EdTech fellow Jermaine Elliott teaches.]
For the year 2012, the city expects to make at least $540,000 from the space they lease on school buildings’ rooftops.
