Baltimore City Community College has been awarded an S-STEM grant — $600,000 in federal funding — from the National Science Foundation, reports the Baltimore Business Journal.
The money will provide 126 student scholarships through 2017 for “academically-talented, financially-needy students in Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Computer Aided Design and Drafting, and Robotics Technology,” according to the award abstract on the National Science Foundation’s website.
According to the Baltimore Business Journal, the grant is designed to train minority and “underrepresented” students in STEM fields.
This is the second grant BCCC has received from the National Science Foundation. Another grant, worth $870,521, which will expire at the end of August, was awarded to the college to “create and implement a model robotics technician curriculum and to increase the technical proficiency of underrepresented minorities with skills in robotics, electronics, engineering technology, computer and information technology, and manufacturing through robotics instruction,” according to the award abstract.
