Alexander Wang showed color-changing clothes during Fashion Week

The fashion industry has always had this strange balance between following the norm and breaking out of them.

It’s why so much ink spilled on Alexander Wang‘s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week show at the Brooklyn Navy Yard‘s Duggal Greenhouse had to be devoted to how weird it was for fashion leaders to go to Brooklyn, with a kind of condescension and surprise that would have even been strange in the 1990s.

Lest you think this is just a civic-pride narrative and had no technology undertones, apparently Wang’s show ended with models standing in black outfits on a round platform, that began to rotate and then their clothes changed colors as heat was blasted on them. Most coverage of the show barely gives it more than a sentence, though. The writers are too busy congratulating themselves for surviving Dumbo.
