Last night in Bushwick some of the most interesting people in the Brooklyn tech world got together for a happy hour at CartoDB’s American headquarters. There were data scientist, social entrepreneurs, regular capitalist entrepreneurs and urban planners.
We talked to six of them to find out what’s going on and what’s exciting. Here’s what they said:
Travis Lopes
“3D printing offers a cool amalgam because you can make customizable things at scale,” Lopes said. “Imagine what you could make if size of minimum order was irrelevant?”
Adam Chew
“Right now we’re categorizing all the different coworking spaces so when people join they know at least the history of the space,” Chew said. “Like, this space does digital media, that space has great startups. Rise is more fintech. The Farm in SoHo is doing more in the medical field. We’re also doing 360 videos if every single space so people can see those spaces online.”
Luke Thomas
“We’re excited about getting people out into the world to go see amazing things,” said Thomas. “We’re trying to deliver experiences using our community and site that people couldn’t find elsewhere.”
Alex Chohlas-Wood
- NYPD
“What we’re doing is using data to make the city safer and make the police department better at what we do,” Chohlas-Wood said.
Amanda Doyle
- New York Department of City Planning
“Basically we’re helping NYC do better strategic planning across agencies and make NYC a better city for the future,” Doyle said.
Javier de la Torre
“I think the work we do here in Brooklyn is especially interesting,” de la Torre said. “Predicting real estate prices, understanding cities from a geographic perspective. We did a full analysis of housing prices in San Francisco. So these are the things I’m most interested about. Predicting prices, unemployment, economic activity, that data science stuff. I’m particularly excited because on Friday I’m having a son!”
