For the second time, RedSnake Philly brought evangelists of both Python and Ruby together on Tuesday evening at Liberty Two in Center City.
Technically Philly previewed the event here.
Ten local programmers gave ten minute lightning presentations on projects done using either Python or Ruby to a crowd of other programmers and technologists. Presentation topics ranged from how to use Python to predict the alcohol percentage of home brewed beer to the pros and cons of Ruby for newbies to a 16-year study of Ira Glass’s — NPR’s “This American Life” — distinctive accent using Python.
Here is RedSnake Philly’s footage of the event via its Ustream channel.
Jason Garber (@jasongarber), a Ruby developer, made his presentation on Red Cloth available here. Monetate engineer Hunter Blanks (@tildehblanks) tweeted a link to the slides and video of his talk, “What I talk about when I talk about Python” available here. Ruby developer Rob DiMarco (@iotr) tweeted the link to slides of his presentation, “Happier Coding with ActiveSupport,” here.
As organizer Tom Panzarella points out, there is a great photo set on Flickr from Brian Lyttle of the night here.
In addition to his presentation, “Linear Regression, Python, and Beer,” Mike DeLaurentis (@mdelaurentis) reportedly shared his special homebrew, RedSnake Philly Beer, with the attendees.
Pam Selle (@pamasaur) tweeted a great photodump of all the speakers here, as well as a picture of the aforementioned beer.
After the presentations, RedSnake Philly held an open bar after party at Ladder 15.
RedSnake Philly is an annual conference indigenous to Philadelphia put on by Mat Schaffer of Philly.rb, Tom Panzarella of PhillyPUG and Angel Pizarro of the bioinformatics group at Penn. The first iteration of RedSnake Philly was held in 2011.
So far, the faceoff between the two languages has been exciting, but no fisticuffs were reported. Looks like we’ll have to wait until next year.
