The NSF Regional Innovation Engines program, authorized by the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, is run by the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships. Each Engine is a university-anchored coalition working to turn a region’s research strengths into new companies and jobs around a specific technology, from critical minerals to quantum computing. Engines receive $15 million over their first two years and can earn up to $160 million across a decade by hitting milestones. NSF named its first cohort in January 2024 and a second in July 2026.

Their 10-year horizon is unusually long for a federal program, which lets us ask a harder question than who won: whether research in these regions actually becomes new business, and which Engines keep their funding as milestones come due.
