Vince Talbert — vice president of merchant marketing at PayPal and co-founder of online payment platform Bill Me Later, which was acquired by eBay in 2008 — is now spending more time among Baltimore techies within this city’s startup scene. He’s investing and popping up at events, like September’s Startup Weekend.
At Startup Grind on Tuesday evening, he explained part of his motivation for doing so: “I’m willing to lose a little money to build the ecosystem.”

Part of Talbert’s attention is on investing in education technology companies. For Talbert, the motivation for doing so is informed by personal experience. He was a “screw-up” student during college at Towson until several professors took an interest in his academic and professional career.
“I want to give every kid the same chance that those professors gave me,” he told the crowd at Startup Grind.
Hence, making investments in education technology startups in the Baltimore area. “I want every kid to feel like they have a very clear path to their happiness and prosperity,” Talbert said.
