Thomas Dolby combined music and tech skills to create hits like “She Blinded Me With Science” and the ringtones that became associated with Nokia phones.
Now he’s going to be harmonizing the two worlds in his role as a Johns Hopkins professor.
The university announced Wednesday that Dolby will lead the new Music in New Media program at the Peabody Conservatory (which is affiliated with Hopkins).
The four-year undergraduate degree program will blend music and composition, programming and visual media. The idea is to prepare students to work in mediums such as video games, virtual reality and 3D spatialized sound for location-based experiences.
“I’m excited to help Peabody shape Music for New Media into one of the premier programs of its kind, where students can develop the skills and creativity they’ll need to capitalize on the tremendous opportunities out there in the workplace,” Dolby said.
The first cohort will of students will being in the fall semester of 2018.
