There’s a construction boom happening in the Cape Region

Delaware’s Cape Region, which includes the Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Milton areas, is bucking the national trend in construction slowdown, according to The Cape Gazette.

There are currently over 11,500 housing units — including single family homes, condos and apartments — currently in construction or approved for construction, as well as 350,000 square feet of new commercial space and five new hotels.

In addition to the new construction, the Cape Henlopen School District and Beebe Healthcare are undergoing major construction projects.

Coastal Sussex was identified as a hot market by Delaware Public Media last spring, along with Newark, Pike Creek and North Wilmington, where it’s not uncommon to see bidding wars for new or renovated single-family homes as soon as they hit the market. Downtown Wilmington saw an increase in housing as well, with new construction like the Residences at Mid-Town Park.

Sussex County, unlike Northern New Castle County, has plenty room to grow for new construction, on top of a desirable coastal location.

Whether the job market in Coastal Sussex will see a similar boom as these new homes become occupied, or whether new residents will commute to surrounding cities, remains to be seen.
