When South Asian-focused blog Sepia Mutiny shut down last spring, former contributor Kishwer Vikaas Barrica, better known as @PhillyGrrl due to her now-defunct blog, had no place to write the stories she wanted to write: news analysis and opinion pieces about South Asian/American issues.
“I spent the last summer pitching dozens of publications, both print and online, but very few were interested in stories with a South Asian point-of-view,” Vikaas Barrica wrote in an email.
So, along with two other former Sepia Mutiny contributors, she started her own South Asian-focused online magazine: The Aerogram.
While The Aerogram features stories and essays with a South Asian viewpoint, it’s not solely written for a South Asian audience, Vikaas Barrica said.
“For example, we have a recent post that talks about drones,” she said. “Well, that’s also an American issue right now, and also has global implications, given it’s role in the War Against Terrorism.”
Vikaas Barrica, who lives in Market East, is the only cofounder of the site who lives in Philadelphia. Her fellow cofounders live in New York City and San Francisco. The team will launch a fundraising campaign for the site this spring.
