When the latest round of grants from StartUp PHL yielded $130,000 for six Philly nonprofits, makerspace The Hacktory secured a $24,000 slice of the pie.
Leaving City Hall after the grant announcement back in February, Executive Director Georgia Guthrie said she was excited to put together the lineup of summer classes. And now, that lineup is here.
From robotics to 3D printing to wearable tech, the org’s Summer Hardware Bootcamp for adults will run through each week in July and August.
But what about the money, you ask? The StartUp PHL grant will let the makerspace offer scholarships for each weeklong course, bringing the fee down to $75 from the full price of $300. Guthrie said artists, educators and members of underrepresented communities will have priority access.
“Training in topics like wearables, Internet of Things and sound production in our region is expensive, sporadic or non-existent,” Guthrie told Technical.ly. “We believe that a healthy entrepreneurial ecosystem for technical innovation needs to provide access to training for would-be entrepreneurs and makers in the variety of new hardware and technology that exists today.”
