Star Wars Day, or May 4, is just around the corner.
Fanatics celebrate the sci-fi hit by dressing like their favorite character and binging on all the iconic Star Wars films.
While the holiday has been a staple in pop culture since 2011, since the first official Star Wars Day celebration took place at the Toronto Underground Cinema, the popular tag line “May the fourth be with you” dates back to 1979, when Britain named its first female prime minister.
The official Star Wars website describes the origin of “May the fourth be with you.”
“Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain’s first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This message, referring to the day of victory, was ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,’ further proof of the extent to which Star Wars has influenced us all.”
Fans of the franchise looking to do more than use #StarWarsDay on social media can take part in several events across the state.
- The Delaware City Library is holding a Star Wars Day event tomorrow from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Guests can make their own Yoda puppets and join forces with other fans to participate in more Star Wars themed events.
- In Dover, the “May the Fourth Be With You” celebration is going down at Kent County Public Library from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Attends will enter the world of Star Wars, where they can visit characters, enjoy arts and crafts, and have a special reading.
