Sprint and Google are expanding their mobile network partnership to include 5G tech, launching in nine top cities in the first half of 2019, including the District.

The expansion will come through the companies’ Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) partnership to deliver 5G tech to Google Fi customers, enabled by 5G services from Sprint, a press release states. Google Fi is Google’s wireless service using intelligent tech through a combination of wireless providers and WiFi where available for its customers. Google Fi has been active on Sprint’s network since 2015.

“Connecting our customers to great high speed coverage is a vital part of the Google Fi service, made possible by our carrier partners,” Matt Klainer, VP of Consumer Communications Products at Google said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to have Sprint working towards an upgrade for the Fi network to include 5G.”

Along with D.C., the new 5G initiative will launch in eight other major cities in the beginning of this year, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City and Phoenix. Customers will automatically be connected to the new tech depending on their coverage areas and proximity to the downtown areas in these cities.

“This announcement also showcases our dedication to collaborating with Google as we prepare to launch one of the world’s first mobile 5G networks covering multiple major cities,” Jan Geldmacher, president of Sprint Business said in a statement.
