A D.C.-born startup that’s looking to make it easier to arrange pickup or delivery of big items is expanding into Baltimore.
PockitShip’s move to the next metro area north comes after its app launched in the D.C. area in November. Along with the area between D.C. and Baltimore, the company’s map shows that the service extends west to Severna Park and north into Baltimore County.
“This is a natural extension for us as we were already serving several surrounding areas, including Columbia, Md., and we continue to receive more and more requests from residents living North of D.C.,” said Garrett O’Shea, the Falls Church, Va.-based company’s president and CMO.
As our sister site Technical.ly DC reported, the company is looking to help with delivery of bulky items like furniture or appliances. It could be for a new item purchased at a store or a Craigslist pickup that won’t fit in your Zipcar. The user puts in address and item info and takes a picture. Then the app connects with a licensed delivery driver for a quote and to schedule a time.
Along with the app, the startup is seeking to differentiate with flat-rate pricing, which starts at $99 for an item that’s outside and weighs less than 250 pounds. Assembly costs extra.
The startup began making noise in 2015, and has raised $1.7 million.
PockitShip follows Spotluck and UrbanStems as D.C.-area startups that expanded to Charm City.
