picture-11Earlier this week, world-renowned Web design firm Happy Cog snapped up California-based Airbag Industries to form a self-described “super-agency.”
The deal has doubled the size of Happy Cog, which has one of its two offices in Center City.
For those who aren’t Web design geeks, Happy Cog is headed up by the godfather of the Web standards movement, Jeffery Zeldman. The firm is the creator of the Web designer’s bible “A List Apart” and hosts the premier Web design conference series “An Event Apart.” Happy Cog has studios in the 67th Ward, Center City and now, San Fransisco.

As reported by Christopher Wink’s air guitar partner Peter Key over at PBJ, Happy Cog’s 13th and Chestnut offices will now be known as “Happy Cog East” and will continue to be headed by Greg Hoy. The NYC offices will be christened “Happy Cog Studios” and be run by Zeldman, while Aigbag Industries will become “Happy Cog West” and continue to be helmed by Greg Storey.
We can only hope that the Web designers will now begin throwing coastal-based gang signs.
“Clients seeking extraordinary, strategic, standards-based Web design used to tear their hair out choosing between Airbag Industries and Happy Cog,” said Zeldman in a press release.
According to Airbag Industries, the deal had been set in motion during The South by Southwest Interactive conference in March, though Airbag and Happy Cog’s ownership have been friendly for years and thoughts of a deal arose as early as 2006.
Happy Cog says it has not ruled out further expansion.
